The bus is by way the cheapest way of travelling around Dubai, but not necessarily the most convenient.

All buses are air-conditioned and the fares vary from 1 Dhs to 5 Dhs dependant on the length of your journey. Remember to always have plenty of coins as the driver does not give change. You can also purchase books of tickets at the bus stations (students get a reduced price). For regular commuters an e-Go card is available which can be topped up at a cost of 20 Dhs. An area at the front of each bus is reserved for women. There are two main bus stations, one near the Gold souk in Deira and Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai, where you can get a free route map and a schedule. From here you can get a bus to each area of Dubai. One of the drawbacks however is that the bus stops are not always easy to find and although schedules are posted at each stop they do not always prove accurate, there are sometimes long waits between buses which then leads to overcrowding, particularly during rush hours. There are no bus lanes, so when the traffic is heavy the bus has to fight its corner like the rest of the traffic so be prepared for delays. Also let the driver know where you wish to go as if you miss your stop the distance between stops can be quite far and crossing the roads to return can be quite difficult.

Buses are principally used by schoolchildren and guest workers, with Emiratees, residents and most tourists using taxis or cars. There are also inter-emirate buses that provide an efficient service to other emirates. This service is provided by the Dubai Transport Corporation and covers the cities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Qwain, Fujairah and Massafi. These services are constantly under review to meet the transport demands of Dubai.
