Named 'The Sevens', this spectacular sports venue was built by Emirates Airline, one of the world's leading sport sponsors, along with the support of the Government of Dubai.
The venue features a permanent grandstand with 4,500 seats and the addition of temporary stands erected around this permanent structure has increased the capacity to 50,000.
Hospitality areas, broadcast and medical facilities and changing rooms also feature in the design as well as a 30-metre wide promenade, featuring cafes and food outlets.
There are currently six grass pitches and four netball courts at The Sevens, while a nearby sports complex and clubhouse will eventually include provision for tennis, squash, basketball and badminton as well as a gymnasium and swimming pool. Also planned for 2009 is the provision of four new cricket pitches.
Apart from hosting the Rugby World Cup Sevens this weekend, as well as the world record-breaking Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens in November last year, the venue also welcomed over 25,000 spectators for the Emirates and DTCM-sponsored Dubai Football Challenge, which saw David Beckham making his debut for AC Milan as they took on Hamburg SV in January.
The Sevens is home to the offices of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union and has become a hub of rugby in the Middle East. The venue will also eventually regularly cater for other popular sports played in the region, including football, cricket and netball.
